flowerman

First Image

he sells these plastic flowers on the street-side, and no matter how cheap or crummy they look, his smile convinces you that they are just what you want, just what you need, and that they will solve any problem. his name is crichead and he’s from the eastern cape. when summer comes, he plans to sell window shades: “because everyone has flowers in their car now!”

2013_12Dec_06

i sag against my work’s wall upon hearing.
shock, relief, despair, happiness, hope
hope for the country to forge a new image
a moment granted to let go of the previous one
and all its attachments

the warmth of his smile and his being
instant trust
all the hopes we held, poured into this person, our hero
flawed and human, yet so obviously not
a symbol holding such different dreams, with such poise

i met him once, in a box, at the ballet,
thinking about it, don’t think i even looked in his eyes, shy as i was
though felt the strength
behind his soft voice and in his firm hands,
as they wrote, to inspire another
who hadn’t yet grasped the import of this man
for himself:
simply led by others’ awe

daughters of the holy mami

First Image

introduced as the daughters of the holy mami in djodje village, they facilitate a pouring of libations as you enter their compound. They also aid the holy mami in communicating with the resident ghosts in order to extend protection, heal or inspire members of the community.

The woman on the left is holding an icon of her deceased twin sister. "She takes her everywhere she goes. To dine, to wash, to pray."
.........

First Image I felt this needed a follow up. So much of the warmth and chemistry exuded by the wonderful people i've met here disappears when a camera is raised. Here there exists quite a formal relationship between the camera and subject, which contradicts our western demands or desires to 'smile for the camera.' Still i find that the visual solemnity of many of my subjects tells a different tale to our engagement.

200 years of character | 30 november, 2012
First Image

i’ve passed this house a few times and it stands out from the colourful neat houses of bo kaap. some say it’s run down - i say it has character. the owner, born and raised in this house, youngest of six siblings, tells me it was built by her family just over 200 years ago.
this is my 365th “photo a day” - i’ve been running this for only (already!) 1 year!
